SHRED THE LOVE // SUGAR BOWL

image

This year, Lake Tahoe did Shred the Love in a big way!  Being the 6th annual Shred the Love at Sugar Bowl, we decided to expand the series throughout Lake Tahoe by having five events in 7 days. The events, including rail jams, yoga sessions, skate and BMX sessions and more all promoted a healthy active lifestyle, focusing on the mind, body and soul as the best prevention.

Friday March 29th was the kick-off party at the Pastime Club in downtown Truckee with Hard Rock Café’s battle of the bands winner, Island of Black and White. The rocked out, and we all celebrated with giveaways, raffles and good times.

Saturday was the return to Sugar Bowl Resort, with a rail jam in front of the Judah Deck with a DJ in the park throwing down beats, while the 40 participants shredded in the park. The crowd was dancing and cheering on our youngest athlete who was only 7 years old!  We had awesome silent auction and raffle items all day long, and a sponsor village with B4BC, Arbonne healthy snacks, Local Knits, and Urban Angel providing hair cuts/styles for donations. On-site face painting was fun for all!

On Easter Sunday, we ventured over to Woodward Tahoe. We hosted the first Shred the Love BMX/Skate Jam for all ages. Again our youngest was 7 years old, and he ripped!  We had 10 BMX riders and 15 skaters. Each discipline jammed 45 minutes with DJ Treez mixing the beats.

April 4 we headed to Kings Beach where the Lake Tahoe Wellness Center hosted a free yoga class for survivors, friends, and family. The class was followed by healthy snacks and a speech from the center’s owner, Dr. Lily Kuehne.

We wrapped up Shred the Love at Studio Tahoe. The yoga class benefited B4BC and was followed by a Kombucha tasting and talk by Tahoe locals Bella Bucha.

We would sincerely like to thank all our sponsors, fundraisers and everyone who helped make this happen:  The North Face, Paul Mitchell, GoPro, Sugar Bowl Resort, Woodward Tahoe, Tahoe Wellness Center, and Studio Tahoe. Thank you to all the local shops and company’s that donated to the silent auction/raffles!

A look inside the 2012 Ocean ReTreat Yourself

From Sept. 14-16, B4BC hosted the first ever Ocean ReTreat Yourself for 9 breast cancer survivors from the ages of 26-56 in a beautiful, ocean front house in Encinitas, Calif.

Together with B4BC Wellness Ambassador and The North Face sponsored pro snowboarder Megan Pischke Porcheron, we were excited to offer a weekend focused on wellness, meditation, and being active and healthy through yoga, surf, clean organic eating and life skills workshops on achieving balance and staying grounded in our lives. Some survivors were 13 years in remission, others still going through their last rounds of chemotherapy, but all had much to share with each other and B4BC about their experiences.

We were touched by their stories and are so happy that the women felt safe and comfortable about opening up to each other.  Many committed to stay in touch and others realized a new passion in their lives – surfing and yoga!

It was truly a weekend of support, reflection, rejuvenation and fun!   And we are incredibly humbled, inspired and thankful to have been a part of the journey.  A special thank you to Linda Kennoy, Courtney Noble, JP of Surfin Fire and the Flavor Chef Lance for donating your time and talents as well as hellomellow for their all-natural bath and body blend giftbags.  The weekend would not have been possible without the support of The North Face, and we are forever grateful.

Wishing much love and light to you ladies - Allison, Amanda, Cindy, Kimberly, Lorraine, Patti, Ruthe, Sharishta and Vero.  Your strength and courage are a true inspiration to us all!

Namaste,

Erika, Megs, Crystal & Team B4BC

YOGA HEALS // NYC

If you weren’t able to make it to our last Yoga Heals event, read about it here and learn how to host your own session!

On a sunny Saturday in June, we set our intentions for the day’s practice, then were led through a restorative Vinyasa session at Bija Yoga in Union Square; and what a healing day it truly was! After class, Brooklyn’s own Body & Eden was on hand to sample their nutrient-dense green tonic, “I Have Energy,” which was super tasty and gave everyone a natural boost of energy.

Our post-yoga hunger pangs were also not forgotten, as KIND Snacks provided a hearty supply of KIND bars, and Mediterranean Snacks threw in some crispy lentil crackers for good measure. Sacred Rose Organic Herbal Tea also provided beautifully boxed loose-leaf tea for students to unwind with after class (caffeine free and comes in a ton of healing flavors!)

Many thanks to studio owner, Veronica Perretti, for hosting us in her bright, beautiful studio (it was easy to see why Bija Yoga was named one of the city’s most beautiful yoga studios by Well+Good NYC!)

Funds raised directly support the B4BC Survivorship Fund, which connects breast cancer survivors with nature-based wellness retreats in order to enhance their path of healing and long-term survivorship. If you’d like to host your own Yoga Heals session, contact yogaheals@b4bc.org.

YOGA HEALS// Namaste Brooklyn, NY

YOGA HEALS // Brooklyn, NY // The power of yoga was evident this past weekend at B4BC’s Yoga Heals kickoff event in NYC! Following a sweaty Vinyasa session, participants cooled down with beverages from Brooklyn based companies Body & Eden, and Pure Luck Tea Bar, as well as Vita Coco and Zevia. CakeBites (which are vegan & gluten free!) Buddha Chocolate, and KIND Snacks, provided tasty treats for all to munch on while we recovered from some of the moves we learned (anyone else new to the airplane?!) Proceeds from the event benefitted the B4BC Survivorship Fund.

Special thanks to Sangha Yoga Shala’s Alana Kessler for hosting the yoga session & studio open house, as well as all of our amazing sponsors for providing product for the goodie bags and raffle! (Sacred Rose Tea, Libre, Fitbug, Essential Bodywear, Whole Truth Holistic, Calton Nutrition, Jiva Apoha, be present, Metropolis Soap Co., Be Well with Arielle, Naturally Good Soaps, Yes to Carrots and Bachman’s Sparrow Lip Balm).

Pause for Prevention: Choose Cruciferous

Mom always said to eat your veggies, but she probably didn’t say anything about cruciferous veggies specifically. Cruciferous vegetables, including cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and especially broccoli, contain high amounts of sulforaphane, which has major benefits for fighting breast cancer.

Here’s a quote from our friend Vivekan at Bodhisattva Yoga:

More and more, science is pointing to diet as either, the culprit of disease, or, the source of good health. A recent study furthers the growing knowledge that broccoli – and other cruciferous vegetables – is excellent in preventing cancer. These veggies, especially broccoli, are packed with a compound called sulforaphane. It is this very compound, sulforaphane, that is proving over and over again to fight cancer. These cancer-fighting benefits are optimized by not overcooking the veggies. So, join me in ordering that side of broccoli.

So listen to mom, because there are way more benefits in broccoli than even she knew!
