We are all busy, busy, busy, all of the time. Whether you are a student or work full time or have a family to take care of or all of the above, we know what it is like when you can’t tell whether you are coming or going. Each day, try to carve out a small window of time just for yourself to meditate, reflect, and take a breather. Do it first thing in the morning, during your lunch hour, before you go to bed, or whenever you can.
Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit. Sit up tall and close your eyes. Inhale through your nose while counting slowly to three. Without pausing, exhale slowly through your mouth with pursed lips (like you are going to blow on warm soup), to a count of 4 to 6. Gradually increase the exhalation until you can reach a count of 8. Repeat this breathing exercise for several minutes. While doing this, focus on the moment. Concentrate on your breaths, not on all of the things you have to do that day. Taking a moment to do this will help you stay centered when everything around you seems to be out of control.
Another helpful thing that you can do to help you find your center is to place inspirational or mindful quotes in places that you would frequently see them—on the fridge, on your computer, on your bathroom mirror, or on your dashboard. Reading these can help remind you to put your health and your sanity first.
Here are a few we like:
